LONGi at UNCCD COP17: Li Zhenguo Explains Two Technological Pathways for PV-Powered Food Security
LONGi said its photovoltaic solutions could cut emissions and improve food-supply resilience as droughts and floods strain agriculture.
On August 23, LONGi released its PV-powered food security solutions at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, presenting technological pathways for integrating solar energy with ecological restoration.
Extreme weather events have severely impacted agricultural production, placing unprecedented pressure on global food systems; Chief Technology Officer of LONGi Li Zhenguo noted that traditional food production relies heavily on natural photosynthesis and climatic conditions.
Calculations show deploying PV on 3.7% of the Sahara Desert could generate 26 trillion kWh, enough to synthesize 3 billion tonnes of food, raising efficiency to 7–10% compared to 2% in natural photosynthesis.
LONGi is validating its energy-water-food nexus in the Kubuqi Desert, China, by raising livestock and planting crops under panels, revitalizing barren land and providing a replicable solution for ecological restoration.
Looking ahead, LONGi will leverage Solar-plus-Storage technologies to address climate change and promote deep integration of PV with agriculture and water resources, building a more resilient global sustainable development system.
