London's ULEZ linked to improved lung growth in children, says study
Researchers found London children’s forced expiratory volume rose 10 milliliters a year faster, while clinically impaired lung function fell from 14% to 9%.
On Tuesday, a Queen Mary University study revealed London's Ultra Low Emission Zone accelerated children's lung growth between 2018 and 2022, with lung health becoming comparable to children in Luton, a city without a clean air zone.
Introduced in 2019, ULEZ aims to improve air quality by reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions from older vehicles, requiring drivers to pay a £12.50 daily charge to enter London boroughs.
Data from more than 3,400 children aged six to nine showed clinically impaired lung function in London fell from 14% to 9%, compared with a shift from 9% to 7% in Luton over the same period.
Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Asthma + Lung UK, called the findings "hard evidence" for recovery, while Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan said the report proves ULEZ "is working and has been a huge success."
Professor Chris Griffiths argued that clean air zones should be "a priority for cities globally with traffic-related air pollution," as campaigner Jemima Hartshorn called for national leaders to implement similar measures across Britain.
