LSEG plans tokenised UK shares, partners with Kraken-owner Payward
The first 100 LSE-listed companies will be offered as one-to-one-backed tokens that can trade 24/7 and move into self-custody wallets.
- On Tuesday, London Stock Exchange Group and Payward, the owner of Kraken, announced a partnership to bring shares of 100 LSE-listed companies to the blockchain.
- The initiative issues blockchain-based versions of equities, allowing assets to move instantly, 24/7, into self-custodied wallets or DeFi protocols while tracking the same underlying price.
- In just over a year, the products generated more than $40 billion in total trading volume with more than 200,000 holders, while the agreement enables LSE-listed shares to reach investors across more than 110 countries.
- Subject to regulatory approval, London Stock Exchange will list tokens on its 24-hour venue. CEO Julia Hoggett noted tokenization "must develop in a way that preserves the trust, rights and role of regulated markets."
- Payward CEO Arjun Sethi stated, "For years, the assumption was that crypto and traditional finance were on a collision course, and one of them would have to lose." The companies also plan to explore natively LSE-issued equity tokens.
