London faces more disruption as second 24-hour tube strike begins

The 24-hour walkout over a condensed four-day week is set to close two lines and disrupt most of the network, TfL said.

  • On Tuesday and Thursday, Rail, Maritime and Transport union members staged 24-hour strikes, disrupting London Underground services and causing widespread cancellations across the network.
  • Transport for London chief operating officer Claire Mann proposed a voluntary four-day working week to improve flexibility, but RMT officials rejected the plan citing concerns about shift lengths and driver welfare.
  • Thousands of commuters turned to cycling during the walkouts, with nearly 4,000 riders clocked on the Embankment by 8:45am compared to a daily average of 252. Forest e-bikes reported a 50% surge in rides during rush hour.
  • Severe service reductions forced the suspension of the Piccadilly and Circle lines, while other routes faced significant delays throughout the week. TfL warned disruptions would persist until Friday afternoon.
  • Additional 24-hour strikes are planned for May and June unless the dispute is resolved, with RMT and management at an impasse over shift lengths and working conditions.
