Malone Joins Local Leaders in Call for Data Center Moratorium Vote
Local leaders want bipartisan legislation to let municipalities pause new hyperscale data center applications while they study impacts, including power, water and zoning.
- On Thursday, State Sen. James Malone joined municipal leaders in West Hempfield Township to urge the Pennsylvania Senate to reconvene and vote on bipartisan legislation allowing municipalities to temporarily pause new data center applications.
- House Bill 2496, which passed the House 201-1, offers municipalities a 180-day pause on data center approvals, while Senate Bill 1345 proposes an 18-month moratorium, both pending full Senate action.
- West Hempfield Township Manager Andrew Stern said he has "never seen a proposed land use generate this level of public concern," while Columbia Borough Council Vice President Heather Zink emphasized officials need time to "understand this rapidly evolving technology."
- Republican Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman responded that he "can't help that Sen. James Malone must regret his vote against a statewide moratorium on data centers," as the Senate is not scheduled to reconvene until September 28.
- Running for reelection in the 36th Senate District, Malone faces a competitive campaign against Republican State Rep. Tom Jones, though Malone claims the moratorium push is unrelated to the election.
