Liverpool retires number 20 shirt at all levels in honour of Diogo Jota
MERSEYSIDE, ENGLAND, JUL 11 – Liverpool FC will retire the number 20 shirt at all levels to honor Diogo Jota's impact, marking the first time the club has retired a shirt number, the club said.
- Liverpool Football Club has decided to withdraw the number 20 jersey from use at all levels of the club as a tribute to Diogo Jota following his tragic death in a car accident on July 3, 2025.
- This decision followed the tragic deaths of Jota and his brother Andre Silva, whose car left the road in northern Spain after experiencing a tyre blowout.
- Jota became a Liverpool player in 2020, netting 65 goals over 182 matches and playing a key role in the club securing the Premier League title, as well as victories in the FA Cup and EFL Cup during his five years at Anfield.
- The club will retire the number 20 across all teams, provide a free 16-page commemorative matchday programme with tributes to Jota and Silva, and observe a minute’s silence with players wearing black armbands.
