Listeria Outbreak Linked to Meals From Walmart, Kroger, Trader Joe's
The outbreak has caused 20 confirmed infections and four deaths across 15 states, with contaminated pasta meals from FreshRealm linked to multiple retailers, officials said.
- On Sept. 25, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert adding Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce and Trader Joe's Cajun‑Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo.
- Testing of pre-cooked pasta confirmed Listeria in FreshRealm's linguine, traced to a third-party pasta supplier connected to a June recall of ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo meals.
- Marketside 12-ounce trays show best-if-used-by dates Sep. 22, 24, 25, 29, 30 and Oct. 1, 2025, while Trader Joe's 16-ounce trays list Sep. 20, 24 and 27 dates with establishment number P-45288.
- The CDC reports 20 cases linked to the outbreak, including 19 hospitalizations, four deaths, and one fetal loss; federal agencies urge consumers who purchased the products to discard or return them and clean contacted surfaces.
- Federal and state agencies are investigating as FreshRealm advised Walmart to pull the meals, Walmart removed the products, and testing continues to link the new strain to the associated June strain.
