Lipid-Lowering Medications Demonstrate Cardiometabolic Benefits in Populations with High-Risk Diabetes
The studies found olezarsen cut pancreatitis risk by 81% and evolocumab lowered heart attack risk by 35% in high-risk diabetes patients.
Researchers presented new data at the American Diabetes Association's 2026 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans from June 5-8, demonstrating that Olezarsen and Evolocumab address common diabetes complications.
Lead author Yu Mi Kang, MD, PhD, MPH, reported that Olezarsen lowered triglyceride levels and reduced acute pancreatitis risk by 81% in patients with diabetes.
Clinical data from 1,063 patients showed that 50mg and 80mg doses of Olezarsen reduced excess blood fat by 64.8% in those with a diabetes history.
Professor Lawrence A. Leiter, MD, FRCPC, FACP, FACE, FAHA, FACC, of the University of Toronto, reported Evolocumab lowered "bad" cholesterol by more than 50% and reduced heart attack risk by 35%.
Over 155 million Americans live with diabetes or prediabetes, facing elevated risks for cardiovascular disease and acute pancreatitis, making these medications' benefits significant for public health.
