Lions rescued from war-torn Ukraine get health checks
Yorkshire Wildlife Park vets performed health assessments and vasectomies on three orphaned Ukrainian lions to monitor their health and control breeding, the zoo said.
- On their September arrival earlier this year, Yorkshire Wildlife Park carried out full health checks on Oleg, Rafael and Shanti, with specialist vets from the International Zoo Veterinary Group assessing the pride.
- Vets recommended vasectomies because Oleg and Rafael were coming up to breeding age, and the three lions were rescued from conflict zones in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine.
- Trained to present to keep stress low, Oleg voluntarily received tranquilization before vets carried him to a neighbouring den temporary operating theatre for blood samples, dental and joint checks, and X‑rays.
- Park staff said the animals recovered well after a long but as-stress-free-as-possible day, and the operation continues the park's third rescue, bringing 17 lions to Lion Country.
- Months ago the lions arrived shut down, but park care staff have seen Oleg, Rafael and Shanti running, chasing and playing as part of their recovery from Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
