Detroit Lions May Use NFL Draft to Address Needs at Offensive Tackle and Edge Rusher
Detroit has limited major free-agent additions and may use two early picks to shore up the offensive line and pass rush.
- Ahead of the April 23 NFL draft in Pittsburgh, the Detroit Lions are prioritizing salary cap space for extensions over aggressive free agency. General manager Brad Holmes said, "We did the best we could, and we maximized the resources that we had available."
- Following the release of left tackle Taylor Decker, All-Pro Penei Sewell will move to the left side, while the team signed Larry Borom, Cade Mays, and Juice Scruggs to solidify the offensive line.
- Detroit signed veteran edge rusher D.J. Wonnum to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. While Al-Quadin Muhammad left for Tampa Bay, Holmes said, "We feel good about both of them, so we don't feel like we have to supplement them."
- Despite these additions, the Lions still need help on both lines, with Alabama's Kadyn Proctor potentially available in the draft. Other edge rusher options include Miami's Akheem Mesidor or Texas's Cashius Howell.
- Coach Dan Campbell said, "That was big for us," regarding recent moves, while Holmes maintains he will target the best player available to avoid reaching in the upcoming draft.
