Modders Are Trying to Bring Game Pass and Xbox Games to Mac and Linux
The open-source tool has already cleared Xbox account login and game decryption hurdles as developers work toward local play on non-Windows devices.
- On Monday, developers launched Project Xodus to bring Game Pass support to Linux and Mac, aiming to enable native local gaming beyond current cloud-only options.
- Steam Deck and Linux owners currently rely on Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass access, which requires a $22.99 monthly subscription and stable internet connection, adding streaming latency.
- Lead developer Pawel Lidwin and contributors reverse-engineered the Microsoft authentication and packaging pipeline using Rust-based code, enabling Xbox account logins and game downloads on Linux.
- Despite this progress, the project does not support Older Universal Windows Platform titles like Gears of War, as documentation states: "The considerably more difficult task of actually getting those games to run is an entirely different milestone."
- Developers plan to target Minecraft Bedrock Edition and backward-compatible Xbox titles in the future, though no public release timeline exists as the team solves runtime emulation challenges.
