UK and Indonesia agree to send home a British woman facing death penalty for drugs

On Oct. 21, 2025, Indonesia and Britain agreed to repatriate Lindsay Sandiford, 69, signing the arrangement in Jakarta with Indonesia's Senior Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra.
The case stems from Sandiford's 2012 arrest after she was found guilty of smuggling 4.8 kg of drugs hidden in her suitcase on a flight from Bangkok, and she has been imprisoned on Bali since then with her death sentence upheld in 2013.
Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the release was approved on humanitarian grounds after a British Consulate doctor in Bali found her seriously ill and officials noted her good behaviour in prison.
Officials said Sandiford could return home in the next two weeks, and Shahab Shahabadi, 35, serving a life sentence since 2014, will be repatriated with her.
About 530 people remain on Indonesia's death row, mostly for drug crimes including nearly 100 foreigners, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections reported last month; Indonesia's last executions occurred in July 2016.
