Iran: EU Leaders Threaten Snapback Sanctions over Nukes
China opposes UN sanctions snapback on Iran, supporting diplomatic talks and aligning with Russia to block European efforts amid JCPOA expiration in October, officials said.
- On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated China opposes invoking the UN Security Council's `snapback` mechanism, saying it `does not help build trust`.
- On Wednesday, the European troika warned they would trigger the `snapback` mechanism if Iran does not meet the end of August deadline, citing breaches including over 40 times the uranium limit.
- Last month, Iran disputed the legitimacy of Britain, France and Germany, supported by China and Russia, to trigger the 'snapback' mechanism at the UN.
- On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran is actively collaborating with China and Russia to prevent the reactivation of UN sanctions and warned, 'If this does not work and they apply it, we have tools to respond.'
- Amid a looming expiration in October, China intends to safeguard the JCPOA and emphasizes that `snapback` sanctions are `not conducive to the diplomatic effort for the early resumption of talks`, said Lin Jian.
