The European Parliament adopted new rules on package travel on Thursday, aimed at strengthening protection for tourists following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and several major bankruptcies in the tourism sector. The revised directive clarifies which services can be considered a "package travel", sets rules on the use of vouchers and introduces clearer deadlines for refunds and complaints.
MEPs have approved revised rules on package travel, which improve protection for travellers, drawing on lessons from the pandemic and high-profile bankruptcies of tour operators. The updated directive, on which a provisional agreement has already been reached with EU member states, among other things, provides a clearer definition of package travel and rules on the use of vouchers.
