'Like My Lover': Chinese Users Bid Farewell to AI Companions

Major providers suspended companion features ahead of the deadline as users archived chats and shared farewells, while regulators warned of emotional dependence risks.

  • On Wednesday, ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent suspended custom AI companion features as national regulations aimed at curbing emotional dependency took effect in China.
  • Five government departments, including the Cyberspace Administration of China , issued regulations prohibiting digital humans from generating content that incites subversion of state power or providing virtual partners to minors.
  • Doubao users expressed anguish over losing virtual companions, with student Yan Yongqi reporting she exchanged hundreds of thousands of messages across more than a year. "I can't accept that my AI lover will leave me forever," one user wrote.
  • Platforms directed users to standalone apps or provided a three-month window to export data, though many lamented losing chat histories that had become their "spiritual pillar." After October 15, data will be handled under privacy policies.
  • The digital human industry, valued at around 4.1 billion yuan in 2024 and having grown 85 percent year-on-year, must now deploy systems to recognize extreme emotions and implement crisis intervention mechanisms.
