6 killed in air ambulance crash just outside Kenya’s capital
MWIHOKO AREA, KIAMBU COUNTY, KENYA, AUG 7 – The crash killed four on board and two on the ground in a densely populated area, with investigations ongoing into the cause, officials said.
- A Cessna Citation XLS plane belonging to AMREF Flying Doctors crashed on Thursday afternoon in the residential area of Mwihoko, Kiambu County near Nairobi.
- The plane departed from Wilson Airport at approximately 2:14 PM but stopped communicating with air traffic controllers just three minutes after takeoff, before it crashed.
- Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang, seeing a fireball, and debris scattered across the neighbourhood while the Kenya Red Cross sent rescue teams to the scene.
- Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula reported that a total of six people lost their lives in the incident, with four passengers inside the aircraft and two individuals inside a home impacted by the crash, while an additional two people sustained serious injuries.
- The service provider stated it is cooperating fully with aviation authorities and emergency teams to determine the cause and manage the aftermath of the crash.
