- "Anyone can drown, and that includes people who know how to swim," Twaites said, emphasizing that wearing a PFD or lifejacket is the most important protection for water activities.
- Intoxication is a significant risk factor, as alcohol and drugs "don't mix" with water activities, Twaites stressed, while the Coroners Service identified Okanagan Lake as the province's deadliest lake.
- Chief Coroner Jatinder Baidwan urged people to "make smart choices" during water activities in coming months, while experts recommend swimming with friends and completing CPR training.
