Joanna Lumley and Queen Camilla Among Guests at Memorial for Jilly Cooper

Dame Jilly Cooper, who inspired TV adaptations and received a damehood for literature and charity, will be honored by friends, family, and notable actors at Southwark Cathedral.

  • A memorial service will be held at Southwark Cathedral in central London to honor Dame Jilly Cooper, who died unexpectedly in October aged 88 after a fall, reports PA.
  • Known for steamy fiction, Dame Jilly Cooper built a reputation with novels on scandal and adultery including Riders, Rivals and Polo, and her works have been adapted for TV, including the recent Disney+ Rivals series.
  • Having received national honours, Cooper was made a CBE in 2018 and a dame in 2024, later calling the King’s investiture `orgasmic`; she continued writing in 2023 using Monica and published Tackle! and Mount!.
  • She is survived by her two children, Felix and Emily, and friends and family are expected to attend the memorial service, PA news agency reports.
  • Camilla previously described Cooper as a `wonderfully witty and compassionate friend` and a writing `legend`, noting Rupert Campbell-Black is said to be partly based on Andrew Parker Bowles.
