Closure orders were issued to 10 food premises due to pest infestations and inadequate controls, with rodent droppings and cockroach evidence found by Food Safety Authority inspectors.
- Last month, a Lidl supermarket on the Sallynoggin Road in Glenageary, Co Dublin, was closed after inspectors found rodent droppings and a live mouse in the store.
- Inspections uncovered a 'significant cockroach infestation' at the Brandon Hotel on Prince's Street in Tralee, Co Kerry, and a storage unit at Emerald Park in Ashbourne, Co Meath, was closed for pest control issues.
- On July 2, a closure order under EU regulations was served on Costa Coffee on Dawson Street after inspectors found rat droppings in the dishwasher room, food store and at the main customer entrance.
- Following ongoing trade, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland secured a High Court prohibition order against the Sallynoggin store on July 29, with the closure served that day and lifted on August 1.
- Chief Executive Greg Dempsey said, 'Consumers are entitled to expect that the food they purchase is safe, and food businesses have a clear legal and moral responsibility to ensure that it is,' highlighting broader food safety concerns.
