Liberia: Rebuilding Providence Island Is an Act of Nation-Building

Summary by allAfrica
Every country keeps one place that explains it to itself. Ghana has Cape Coast Castle. Senegal has Gorée. Liberia has Providence Island, and for most of living memory we have left it to the mango trees, the tide and a caretaker with a key. The government's decision to develop it into a full heritage destination is therefore more than a tourism investment. It is the country choosing, at last, to take care of the ground it came from.
