LGBTQ Representation in Film Drops to Three-Year Low_ Says GLAAD Report
- GLAAD released the 13th annual Studio Responsibility Index on Wednesday, reporting on LGBTQ representation in 250 films from 10 major studios in 2024.
- In 2024, films featuring LGBTQ representation made up just 23.6% of releases from major studios, marking a decline from 27.3% in 2023 and 28.5% in 2022—the lowest share seen in three years.
- The report found that fewer than 1% of films—only two titles—included transgender characters, who were often depicted through stereotypical portrayals or cast inauthentically, while the representation of LGBTQ characters of color dropped to 36%, marking the lowest level since 2019.
- GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis called the findings "a wake-up call to the industry" and emphasized that films must be spaces for visibility and truth to reflect whose stories get told and valued.
- The decline in LGBTQ representation suggests studios miss opportunities to engage diverse audiences, with only A24 earning a "Good" rating by releasing 56% LGBTQ-inclusive films amid ongoing attacks against LGBTQ communities.
