In the early hours of December 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale struck the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia. The tsunami was not long in coming and was truly devastating. The worst was in the Indonesian province of Aceh, but it also killed in India, Thailand, Sri Lanka and several other countries. People even lost their lives on the western coast of Africa, more than six thousand kilometers away.
