Leonardo, Rheinmetall Book First Lynx Combat Vehicle Order for Italy

The Italian Army's order for 21 Lynx vehicles is part of a $23 billion program to acquire 1,050 armored combat vehicles for fleet modernization, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, the Italian Army ordered 21 Rheinmetall Lynx vehicles from Leonardo and Rheinmetall, marking the first tranche under the A2CS programme of 1,050 vehicles.
  • Last year Rheinmetall and Leonardo agreed to team up to build the Lynx and 272 Panther tanks as part of a 23 billion deal to renew Italy's tracked vehicle inventory.
  • The manufacturers detailed configurations including five Rheinmetall Lynx KF-41 vehicles with Lance turrets and 16 with Leonardo's Hitfist 30mm turret, produced in five variants performing 16 roles.
  • The deal includes options for an additional 30 vehicles and training and simulation systems, and both programmes will involve assembly in Italy using Leonardo components and systems, David Hoeder said.
  • Delivery forecasts show the first vehicle is expected by the end of this year and the first five vehicles will be delivered by the end of 2025 with Leonardo's 30mm X-Gun.
