The new European rules on freedom of the media entered into force on Friday 8 August. The aim of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) is to protect the pluralism and independence of the media in the European Union, so that each Member State will have to comply with the same rules, in particular concerning the independence, transparency of the media and the protection of sources.
The law requires that state advertisements be distributed openly and without bias. Orbán drew parallels with Soviet and Nazi institutions over the original proposal.
