Legion post honors Spencer soldier

Summary by Spencer Daily Reporter
On May 11, 1919, a group of Spencer World War I veterans boarded a train at 3 a.m. in Carroll to go to Des Moines. They camped out on the steps of the State Capitol to wait for the doors to open so they could put in their petition to become the first American Legion Post in Iowa. The petition was signed that morning by Secretary McVicar. On Aug. 23, 1920, Spencer’s charter was granted and was named American Legion Post No. 1 of Iowa.
