Middle East War Live: Israel, Lebanon Extend Shaky Ceasefire
The extension will give negotiators more time for a permanent deal as Israel continues strikes in southern Lebanon that it says are outside the truce.
On Friday, Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend their ceasefire by 45 days following two days of talks in Washington, with State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott saying the cessation "will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress."
Despite the truce, the Israeli military launched new strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure across southern Lebanon on Saturday, insisting these operations are not subject to the agreement originally set to expire Sunday.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said negotiations for a permanent political agreement are scheduled for June 2 and 3, while the Pentagon will convene military delegations from both countries on May 29.
Lebanon's delegation stated the extension offers "critical breathing room for our citizens" with a goal of "lasting stability," though the government has struggled to restrain Hezbollah amid ongoing Israeli military operations.
This agreement follows the April 17 ceasefire, which failed to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, signaling that future diplomatic efforts face significant hurdles as regional tensions persist.
Israel has ordered the evacuation of nine villages in southern Lebanon, following airstrikes despite a ceasefire in place. The Israeli military said the targets were infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Israel and Lebanon agreed in Washington on Friday to extend a ceasefire that began on April 16 by 45 days.
