Lea Salonga Becomes First Filipina with Star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame
Salonga was honored for her Tony-winning role in Miss Saigon and her influence on Disney films, marking a milestone for Filipino performers.
- On Friday, Lea Salonga became the first Filipina to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honored in a ceremony outside the historic Hollywood Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.
- Salonga began performing in Philippine musical theater at age seven, later becoming the original Kim in 'Miss Saigon' and winning the Tony Award for best actress in 1991, the first Asian woman to do so.
- Beyond stage roles, Salonga provided the singing voice for Disney princesses Jasmine in 'Aladdin' and Mulan, earning her the official Disney Legend title in 2011.
- During the ceremony, performers Brandy, Darren Criss, and Ming-Na Wen delivered tribute speeches. Salonga reflected, "This is surreal," expressing hope that young Filipino kids will see her name and believe they too can reach Hollywood.
- The ceremony preceded Salonga receiving the Icon Award at the Manila International Film Festival's Gala two days later, while she also voices The Dreaded Manananggal in 'Forgotten Island,' arriving September 25.
