Yolo County Asks Calif. AG to Join Probe Into Deadly Fireworks Explosion over ‘Public Perception of Conflicts’

YOLO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, JUL 22 – The lawsuit targets fireworks companies and property owners after a July 1 explosion killed seven, with state authorities investigating possible license revocations and criminal charges.

  • On Friday, Etta James Farming LLC filed the first lawsuit in Yolo County Superior Court against Devastating Pyrotechnics, Blackstar Fireworks, Cutright and Machado.
  • Following the explosion, the State Fire Marshal’s office is leading the investigation with Yolo County DA oversight, while Daniel Berlant said red flags led to suspending licenses.
  • In Esparto, seven people died, including residents from San Francisco, Sacramento and Stockton, and the warehouse stood on land owned by Lt. Sam Machado.
  • Last week, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors asked Attorney General Rob Bonta to involve the Department of Justice, as no criminal charges have been filed in connection to the July 1 explosion.
  • In the near future, additional lawsuits on behalf of individual victims are expected, and the fire marshal’s office will determine whether to revoke licenses within 30 days.
