Massie, Khanna Ask Judge for Special Master on Epstein Files Release

Khanna and Massie seek court-appointed monitor after DOJ missed Dec. 19 deadline and reviewed only 13,000 of over 2 million Epstein-related documents, raising compliance concerns.

  • On Jan. 8, 2026, Ro Khanna, Representative , and Thomas Massie, Representative , asked U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer to appoint a special master or independent monitor to enforce the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
  • The law required disclosure by Dec. 19, 2025; on that date, the Department of Justice released only a portion of materials and has not filed the required Section 3 report, Khanna and Massie wrote.
  • DOJ filings show a backlog of more than 2 million documents, down from an earlier 5.2 million estimate, with approximately 12,285 documents totaling approximately 125,575 pages produced so far.
  • Khanna told NPR, `We have offered for six months to meet with the Justice Department to help them get the right documents out, and we're now going to be intervening with the Southern District of New York to ask those judges to appoint a special master and ensure that all the documents are released,'
  • On Dec. 24 the DOJ reported receiving over a million additional documents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and SDNY, and Pam Bondi said 400 attorneys are reviewing files with a next batch due Jan. 20.
