Dr Lawan Ahmed Mohammed, a cybersecurity scholar and NITDA director, succeeds his father after kingmakers narrowed nine contenders to three.
- Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi appointed Dr. Lawan Ahmed Mohammed as the 17th Emir of Gumel, succeeding his father who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after a 46-year reign.
- Secretary to the Jigawa State Government Malam Bala Ibrahim announced the selection following consultations by Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers, who evaluated nine initial contenders for the traditional stool.
- Before his appointment, Lawan served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency and holds a PhD in Computer and Communication Systems Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia.
- He previously headed the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Hafr Al-Batin for more than 12 years and authored more than 40 publications on computing and cybersecurity.
- Lawan succeeds his late father, Ahmed Muhammad-Sani, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, with Governor Namadi commending the kingmakers for their guidance during the selection process.
