Latest poll shows Talarico, Abbott ahead in races

  • On Tuesday, a Texas Politics Project survey showed Democratic state Rep. James Talarico leading Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton 42% to 39% among 1,200 registered voters in the closely watched U.S. Senate race.
  • Democratic enthusiasm for voting remains higher than Republican interest, with 87% of Democrats at least somewhat enthusiastic compared to only 39% of Republicans extremely enthusiastic this year versus 52% in 2022.
  • Talarico has raised $72 million since 2025 compared to Paxton's $16.8 million, giving him cheaper ad rates and reserved air time. Paxton was impeached by the state House in 2023, including 70% of Republican members, then acquitted in the state Senate.
  • James Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project, said Talarico is "probably doing a better job at this point of consolidating his vote than Ken Paxton." The poll's 2.83% margin of error suggests "this is a very close race," Henson added.
  • While Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide in 30 years, both parties now treat the state as a battleground. Tech billionaire Elon Musk plans to pour millions into the race, and President Donald Trump is slated to lead a Houston fundraiser Thursday.
