Wilson Converts Penalty Kick to Pull Thorns Into a 2-2 Draw with the Royals
Wilson converted a stoppage-time penalty for her fifth goal as Portland ended Utah’s 10-match unbeaten run.
Sophia Wilson scored a penalty kick in stoppage time on Saturday, giving the Portland Thorns a 2-2 draw with the Utah Royals in a matchup between the league's top teams.
Entering the match unbeaten in their last 10 games, the first-place Royals aimed to maintain their lead atop the standings. Portland sought to protect its home fortress.
Olivia Moultrie opened the scoring in the 21st minute for the Thorns, but Kiana Palacios equalized in the 44th. After Clo Lacasse gave Utah a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute, Alexa Spaanstra fouled Jayden Perry to set up Wilson's late equalizer.
Portland's draw extended its unbeaten home streak to over 10 regular-season matches, though it ended the team's 637-minute home shutout streak. The Thorns remain competitive near the top of the standings.
In other NWSL action Saturday, the Washington Spirit defeated the Seattle Reign 2-1, while the Kansas City Current topped the Boston Legacy 1-0. The Current remain unbeaten at home.
