- On Saturday, HM Revenue & Customs urged taxpayers to file Self Assessment returns before the midnight deadline.
- More than 12 million people are expected to file, with more than 10 million filed by Thursday and registration required by October 5 last year.
- Taxpayers who miss the deadline face a 100 fixed penalty, escalating to 10 per day and further 5% or 300 charges after six months, with interest on unpaid tax.
- The revenue body has said its webchat service on Saturday will have 10 times the usual Saturday capacity, with an enhanced phone service 9am–4pm and a 24/7 digital assistant available; fraudsters impersonating HMRC threaten unpaid bills or fake rebates.
- People unable to pay in full may set up 'time to pay' arrangements online if they owe less than 30,000 and request assistance within 60 days, HMRC said.
