Maoist Misir Besra with over ₹2.2 Cr Bounty Arrested, Naxal Menace Almost Wiped Out: J'khand DGP
Security forces caught the last active CPI (Maoist) central committee member and four associates after a two-decade search, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Jharkhand Police arrested Misir Besra, the last active Politburo member of the CPI , near the Dhanbad-Giridih border carrying a Rs 1 crore bounty.
- With Besra's arrest, no active Central Committee members of the banned outfit remain at large, down from over 40 members at its peak. Security forces have neutralized or secured the surrender of 21 active members.
- Officials said Besra was trapped fleeing the Parasnath temple foothills after massive security deployment. The arrest followed Tuesday's surrender of 16 Maoists, including six carrying a combined Rs 39 lakh bounty.
- The Union home ministry is likely to review West Singhbhum's status as a "district of concern" for Left-Wing Extremism, since Besra's presence in the Saranda forests was the primary reason for the classification.
- Besra's son, Siddharth, expressed relief his father was caught alive, stating "I am glad that the forces have caught him alive," after not seeing him in 20 years.
