Los Angeles FC Co-Owner Larry Berg Will Be the Next Commissioner of the MLS, Succeeding Don Garber

On Monday, Major League Soccer named Los Angeles Football Club co-managing owner Larry Berg as its next commissioner, succeeding longtime leader Don Garber on January 1, 2027.
Garber will remain commissioner through the end of 2026 before transitioning to chairman, having overseen the league's expansion from 10 clubs to 30 over his 27-year tenure.
Berg brings international experience from ownership stakes in Italian Serie A side AS Roma and Swansea City AFC, alongside his background as a former senior partner at Apollo Global Management.
The incoming commissioner will oversee significant transitions, including a 2027 competition calendar update and collective bargaining agreement negotiations with players as MLS enters a pivotal growth phase.
"I'm honored to lead Major League Soccer into its next era," Berg said, while Jimmy Haslam, co-chair of the MLS Succession Committee, praised Berg's "deep understanding of our league.
