'There Is Not Going to Be Any GenAI Art in Divinity': BG3 Studio Larian Draws Line in the Sand
Larian Studios will not use generative AI for in-game art or actor voices without consent while exploring AI tools to streamline development, with over 100,000 voice lines recorded.
- The Larian Reddit AMA will begin at 5:00 AM PT / 8:00 AM ET on Friday, January 9, 2026, on Reddit's r/games subreddit to discuss Divinity.
- After a December admission by Swen Vincke that Larian used generative AI for early concept art, Larian's community of players and critics bombarded the AMA announcement with criticisms and questions about stopping genAI use.
- Larian clarified that no GenAI art will appear in Divinity, and the studio will only include GenAI assets if it owns the training data or has consent from training data owners.
- Protecting performers, Larian emphasized contractual limits on voice-model training, committing not to use recordings for AI voice models and expressing discomfort with AI-generated voices even with actor consent.
- Larian Studios' ML R&D team said experimenting with tools can speed ideation, refining ideas faster and reducing waste with more than 100,000 voice lines scheduled in the game.
