Over 2,000 Pounds of Marijuana Seized After Largo Man Gets Arrested on I-75, FHP Says
Troopers said a K-9 alert led to the discovery of 2,025.70 pounds of marijuana hidden in a camper and the arrest of a Largo man.
- On Wednesday, Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrested Largo resident William Hicks, 55, along I-75 in Sumter County after discovering 2,025 pounds of marijuana inside a modified recreational vehicle during a traffic stop.
- A trooper initiated the stop after observing a GMC pickup towing an RV traveling less than one car length behind another vehicle—a distance the trooper claimed was "not reasonable or prudent."
- After the vehicle stopped, the trooper stated, "While standing outside of the vehicle, I smelled a faint odor of fresh marijuana emitting from the pickup's interior." FHP K-9 Lobo subsequently alerted troopers to contraband inside the camper.
- Inside the modified RV, troopers found 2,025 pounds of marijuana, including "vacuum sealed 1 pound bags of marijuana" labeled with colored duct tape. The camper's interior had been altered specifically to conceal and transport drugs.
- Hicks faces multiple felony charges, including drug and marijuana trafficking, and is being held at Sumter County Jail. Field tests confirmed the substance was cannabis, solidifying the trafficking allegations.
