Patients Evacuated as Huge Fire Breaks Out at North Yorkshire Hospital
Hospital staff said all patients and staff are accounted for as multiple fire crews battled the blaze and police supported road closures.
On Wednesday, a major fire destroyed the Springwood mental health unit at Malton Hospital in North Yorkshire, with all patients and staff safely evacuated without injury.
The Springwood unit provided specialist nursing care for 14 patients, primarily over 65, and was completely destroyed by the blaze as firefighters battled the flames.
Residents on Orchard Road, located about 50ft away, were advised to "keep doors and windows shut" due to heavy smoke, while North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue teams remained on scene.
Mayor of North Dinah Keal praised emergency personnel and staff for safely relocating patients to Malton School, as Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation coordinated ongoing care.
Yorkshire Water reported low pressure for local customers as firefighting efforts consumed mains supply, while Keal expressed hope for the facility to eventually reopen and serve the community.
