Land Rover Pulling the Plug on the Discovery Sport, Production Ending This Year
JLR is phasing out the ageing SUV as updated safety rules would require a costly overhaul, while Halewood shifts toward electric vehicle production.
- Production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport will cease in December 2026, JLR confirmed. The SUV, priced from just over £50,000, is being discontinued as the Halewood factory transitions to electric vehicle production.
- Stringent EU General Safety Regulation 2 rules drive the model's departure. Because the Discovery Sport has remained largely unchanged since 2015, it lacks mandatory features like Intelligent Speed Assistance and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
- With 122,460 global sales in 2016, the Discovery Sport's popularity dwindled to fewer than 12,200 units by 2025. It also departs with a mixed reputation, ranked among the 10 used models most likely to suffer reliability issues.
- Replacing the Discovery Sport as entry point, the Range Rover Evoque will start from £44,430. Meanwhile, the Freelander name returns to showrooms shortly through JLR's partnership with Chinese carmaker Chery.
- Dealers will continue accepting Discovery Sport orders over the coming months, as JLR transitions toward an all-electric future including the new Range Rover Electric and Jaguar's Type 01 EV.
