Lanarkshire to become 'one of the world's most advanced AI sites'

  • On Thursday, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall announced Lanarkshire as an AI Growth Zone to be delivered by DataVita with CoreWeave, and ministers said it has attracted £8.2 billion and could create more than 3,400 jobs.
  • As part of a wider strategy, the project forms part of the Modern Industrial Strategy and AI Opportunities Action Plan, with officials citing Scotland's strengths and ministers framing it as a local jobs boost.
  • Alongside infrastructure, ministers pledged a community fund of up to £543 million over 15 years and committed to 800 roles plus 50 apprenticeships, with more than 500MW power planned.
  • The proposals must still clear statutory planning processes, as AI Growth Zone status is conditional on delivery milestones and regulatory compliance, while Dr Kat Jones warned data-centre jobs often get overstated and strain power grids.
  • AI Growth Zones aim to enhance UK AI capacity, with CoreWeave and DataVita investing 1.5 billion to build production-grade AI cloud capacity, said Ben Richardson.
