Man Pulls 2 Teens From Burning Car After Train Crash
Alex Horak pulled the boys free before flames reached the wreck, and sheriff Roger Fisher said his actions likely prevented critical burns or death.
On Tuesday, July 14, Alex Horak rescued two brothers from a burning vehicle following a train crash in Lakota, Iowa, drawing immediate praise from law enforcement officials.
While driving home from work, Horak noticed a dust cloud and investigated a gravel road, discovering a mangled car positioned just feet from a stopped Union Pacific train.
The car burst into flames seconds after Horak arrived, trapping the 12- and 16-year-old brothers inside. "I couldn't leave the kids in there," Horak said, pulling both to safety.
Both brothers are recovering at a Minnesota hospital after sustaining head and upper-body injuries requiring multiple surgeries from the collision.
Kossuth County Sheriff Roger Fisher announced that his office will host a ceremony in the coming weeks recognizing Horak and two emergency communications operators for their actions.
