LAKE BABINE NATION AND WEST FRASER PARTNERSHIP STRENGTHENS B.C.'S FOREST SECTOR
BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 25 – The partnership between Lake Babine Nation Forestry and West Fraser secures long-term fibre supply and supports economic growth in B.C.'s forest sector, officials said.
- Yesterday, the Government of British Columbia approved a new First Nations Woodland Licence in the Smithers area, to be held by LBN Forestry.
- To shape the licence, West Fraser contributed licence volumes from the Bulkley and Morice Timber Supply Areas, supplemented by BC Timber Sales volume, after Lake Babine Nation formed LBN Forestry in 2016.
- Ravi Parmar said `This is a significant forestry partnership in British Columbia`, and Sean McLaren said `This milestone recognizes Lake Babine Nation's role as resource steward`, noting that LBN Forestry now employs about 27 people under manager Duane Crouse.
- In his statement, Chief Wilf Adam said, for Lake Babine Nation, forestry is not just an industry, and the partnership will bring broader economic opportunities to his community and region.
- With over 2,500 members, the Nation and Chief Wilf Adam said `Ensuring that our forests are managed with respect and sustainably`.
