Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway: Every State Now Construction Site Under Tinubu
The new guards will monitor vandalism, hawking and loitering as work on the highway advances past 80% on Lot 2, officials said.
- On Sunday, Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi launched the 40-member Coastal Highway Guards to enforce strict bans on hawking, loitering, and motorcycle use along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
- The initiative follows alarm over vandalism, unauthorized occupation, and reports of people sleeping on the highway, as Umahi criticized 'unpatriotic elements' for removing construction materials and damaging infrastructure.
- Clarifying the initiative's nature, Umahi emphasized it is a 'full time job to protect National Assets' rather than an empowerment program, with retired General Adekunle Shodunke coordinating the guards and collaborating with security agencies.
- Separately, Umahi appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday to fund essential service lanes and drainage channels, noting state-level support is necessary to complement the main highway.
- Construction continues with Lot 2 reaching more than 80 per cent completion, as Umahi emphasized that properly constructed roads can last for decades if protected from vandalism and deterioration.
