Ladysmith's Duck Paterson heads to Ukraine to deliver ambulances and supplies

- At 75 years old, Ladysmith councillor Duck Paterson will drive an ambulance across Europe this fall, delivering nearly 2,000 kilometres to Ukraine where Ukrainian forces will receive the vehicle packed with medical supplies and generators.
- Paterson decided to volunteer after hearing about similar trips from local resident Peter Shepherd. He views the mission as helping innocent people in a conflict zone, noting that ambulances are destroyed by Russians at alarming rates.
- The journey begins in Munich on Oct. 2, traveling through the Czech Republic and Poland into Ukraine. His wife, Tracy, initially opposed the idea but ultimately supported him, saying she would not stand in his way.
- To cover the $10,000 to $12,000 in expected costs, Paterson is raising funds through donations. On Sept. 12, he plans to have his hair shaved at Johnny's Barber Shop in Ladysmith to support the mission.
- Once the convoy reaches Kyiv, supplies will be distributed to hospitals while the ambulance goes to Ukrainian armed forces. Paterson expects to leave by train on Oct. 14, traveling to Warsaw and then Munich before returning home.
