Labuschagne set for Test after first ton in 11 months
Marnus Labuschagne struck 111 from 89 balls and strengthened his case for Australia’s No. 3 spot after 11 months without a century.
Marnus Labuschagne scored a century during Sunday's warm-up match in Potchefstroom, racing to a 76-ball ton before retiring. The Australian batter, born in Klerksdorp, firmed up his Test spot ahead of Friday's series opener.
Former skipper Ricky Ponting had labeled Labuschagne's spot "untenable" after three years without a Test century. This innings marked his first century in any form of cricket in 11 months, arriving five days before the first Test.
Pat Cummins' Australian side rattled up 6-368, with Steve Smith retiring after making 61 and Alex Carey adding 57. The team gave 11 bowlers a run-out against the Cricket South Africa Invitation XI in the two-day warm-up.
The first Test against South Africa begins on Friday in Durban, with Matt Renshaw expected in the squad after recovering from a wrist injury. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon could also feature in the series opener.
South Africa faces fitness doubts over key strike bowler Kagiso Rabada and three others ahead of the squad announcement. Paceman Anrich Nortje could return to Test cricket after a three-and-a-half year absence to bolster the injury-hit attack.
