Labour's Andy Burnham calls for business rates cut for pubs and small firms
Burnham says the change would help small high-street firms and fund relief by targeting online warehouse rates and empty shops.
- On Friday, Labour's Makerfield by-election candidate Andy Burnham proposed a 20 per cent business rate cut for pubs and clubs, alongside taking independent shops, restaurants, and cafes out of paying business rates entirely.
- Greater Manchester Mayor Burnham called small family high-street businesses "the heart and soul of Britain," planning to fund the cuts by targeting online tech giants' warehouses and "unscrupulous" landlords leaving stores empty.
- Backing the proposal, Ian Mitty of The Holts Arms in Orrell stated, "Every pound saved in business rates can be put back into our local pub," while Dan Shaw of Hare and Hounds in Hindley expressed similar support.
- Burnham confirmed he would seek to join a leadership contest to enter Number 10 if elected, remaining "sympathetic" to cutting employers' National Insurance contrary to Rachel Reeves' previous tax increases.
- Voters in Makerfield will head to the polls on June 18 to select their next MP, a result determining whether Burnham secures the platform to challenge the government's economic direction.
