How Communities Can Fight Back Against ICE’s Unchecked Power
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, JUL 21 – Los Angeles County approved a program offering multilingual training and legal tools to protect small businesses amid over 2,700 arrests in recent immigration enforcement raids.
- An immigrant advocacy organization in Los Angeles published an analysis revealing that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted 471 enforcement actions targeting Latino and communities of color neighborhoods between June 6 and July 20.
- The operations stem from the Trump Administration’s goal to remove people with violent criminal records and reduce illegal crossings, but a judge ordered the government to stop activities violating legal standards.
- CHIRLA reported that ICE used plainclothes agents, unmarked vans, and often failed to clarify agency identity, while officials warn the raids caused fear, disrupted schools and economy, and hurt critical industries like construction and hospitality.
- From early June through late July, CHIRLA reported receiving 1,677 calls about ICE operations in the area, with close to 1,500 accounts noting the presence of armed agents and approximately 389 describing seemingly random detentions. Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva commented that these raids have increased fear rather than safety.
- The Los Angeles judge’s order and community pushback suggest ongoing litigation and efforts to balance enforcement with constitutional rights amid concerns over racial profiling and economic disruption.
