Kyrsten Sinema’s Ex-Bodyguard Accused of Causing $200K in Damage at Her Cave Creek Home
Investigators say Matthew Ammel damaged 22 paintings and other property after Sinema refused to post a video, with losses estimated above $200,000.
- Matthew Ammel, a 39-year-old former bodyguard for ex-Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, was arrested September 18 on felony criminal damage charges, accused of causing more than $200,000 in damage to her Cave Creek home.
- On August 30 while Sinema was out of town, Ammel allegedly entered her home and demanded she post a video to her X account, threatening to "damage her paintings every 10 minutes" if she refused.
- Investigators allege Ammel removed approximately 22 paintings from walls and hurled them into the backyard swimming pool, spray-painted another near the entrance, and shattered a large mirror; broken liquor bottles were scattered throughout the home.
- During his initial court appearance, a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy reported Ammel was combative and remained in the hallway rather than standing before the judge; he has since been released on electronic monitoring.
- Separately, Ammel's ex-wife Heather sued Sinema under North Carolina's "homewrecker" law earlier this year, and U.S. District Judge David A. Bragdon ruled earlier this month the lawsuit can proceed despite Sinema's jurisdictional objections.
