A liaison meeting of relevant ministries regarding measures against bear damage was held at the Ministry of the Environment on the 2nd. As the season for bears to become more active before hibernation is approaching, it was confirmed that public awareness campaigns would be strengthened.
In response to the increasing number of bear attacks on humans, the Ministry of the Environment held a meeting of relevant ministries on the 2nd to discuss countermeasures. It was reported that the number of sightings of Asiatic black bears, which inhabit Honshu and Shikoku, from April to July totaled 17,362 nationwide, the highest number in the past five years. The bears are expected to become more active as they prepare for hibernation.
