A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan yesterday afternoon. Authorities have closed more than 150 facilities, including schools, tourist attractions, and athletic fields. Foreigners living in the area said that shops throughout Kumamoto City have temporarily closed, and many buildings have developed cracks.
At approximately 3:29 a.m. on the 29th, an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 1 occurred in Minami Ward of Kumamoto City, Uto City, Uki City, and Misato Town. According to the Kumamoto Local Meteorological Observatory, the epicenter was in the Kumamoto region, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The magnitude of the earthquake is estimated to be 2.4.
NTT West announced on the 28th that communication services are unavailable in some areas of Kumamoto Prefecture, where an earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 was observed. They stated that they are currently investigating the details.
